Initial situation

The affirmation of tourist destinations on a global scale flows naturally a strong ability to external promotion and progressive strengthening of its reputation. Requires a clear effort of planning and structuring of its offer in order to articulate the economic base and build innovative tourism offerings, to consolidate unique tourism products capable of providing unique and unrepeatable tourist experiences.

Bearing in mind this fundamental ambition to lay the foundations of a competitive tourist destination and its international projection, our proposed solution in this area for Portugal relied on the development of specific technological solutions for three destinations in three different regions with specific needs – Douro (North), Serra da Estrela (central region), and Alentejo Coast (Alentejo region).

Solution

Develop technology-based solutions that determine the competitive positioning of tourist accommodation units of the future, regarding optimised management processes and internal logistics of the different business areas, the promotion of customised tourism experiences, the integration of different media and distribution of various business areas, the valuation of products and offers, and the structuring of offers based on solutions available for mobile devices and anchored on the web (cloud).

The proposed technological solutions resulted from Ubiwhere’s investigation and the unique opportunities identified in each of the tourist destinations. Due to the unique characteristics of each territory, the approach in terms of tourist destination are as follows:

  • Douro (northern region) comprise the tourism product ‘Enotourism';
  • Serra da Estrela (Central region) comprise the tourism product ‘Snow';
  • Alentejo Coast (Alentejo region) comprise the tourism product ‘Golf’.

 

Project results

  • Visitors feel that the regions are using great technology to improve their stay and visit;
  • The development of the technologies applied to tourist destinations are seen as innovative offers, unique products, and unique experiences;
  • Customisation of the available technologies for structuring/promotion of unique/exclusive tourism products – ‘Enotourism’ (Douro), ‘Snow’ (Serra da Estrela) and ‘Golf’ (Alentejo Litoral);

  • Involvement of the Northern Tourism Regional Entities, Centre and Alentejo – identification and awareness of the key players from the tourist destinations;
  • Implementation of pilots and monitoring of results;
  • Having three important regions promoting their regions and showing the best they have to offer to its tourists;
  • Ubiwhere as a strategic partner for those regions.
